The Saturn Pluto Opposition
By Felissa Rose
May 2002 Retrograde Mercury
At 8:18 AM EDT on May 15, 2002 Mercury will go retrograde at 9 degrees 57 minutes of Gemini. It goes direct on June 8 at 11:13 AM EDT at 1 degree 22 minutes of Gemini.
Gemini is the sign ruled by Mercury, so its placement there makes Mercury stronger and feel right at home. This can help alleviate some of the usual Mercury retrograde interruptions particularly in the area of communications. Delays are still likely to occur but with slightly less intensity.
Although Gemini rules wires and tubes this lessening of Mercury retrograde difficulties probably won't apply to cable and electrical installations. It would be a good idea to delay this type of work until Mercury goes direct. Travel plans can also get complicated during this period. If you are taking a trip expect delays and unexpected occurrences.
More on the Saturn and Pluto Opposition
Continuing the discussion of the last writing, the planets Saturn and Pluto oppose each other approximately every 35 to 36 years. The last two times this occurred was on August 5, 2001 and November 2, 2001. It will do so again on May 25, 2002 and then not until July 2036.
Pluto rules what lies underneath, those beliefs and feelings that simmer under the surface ready to emerge and often explode into reality. In astrology Pluto governs explosions, terrorism and the need to transform. It also rules the mass consciousness of society as demonstrated by the Plutonian business of advertising. Pluto is presently moving the sign of Sagittarius; ruler of religion, philosophy, sports, travel and foreign countries. Along with this Pluto rules obsessions, fanaticism, manipulation and hysteria.
Saturn governs structures and the organizations and systems set up by society to enable it to run efficiently, including government, business and corporations...in other words the establishment. Saturn is now transiting Gemini ruling information, books, newspaper and the general dispersing of information.
Manifestations of negative Saturn include control, fear and resistance to change. In the last writing I discussed the influence of this opposition on the events of September 11. I would like to discuss some possibilities in individual horoscopes.
The Saturn / Pluto Opposition and You
The combination of these two energies creates or forces a desire to simplify one's life and live in a more Zen like environment. From an individual's perspective this opposition rules clearing out, going back to basics and eliminating what you've outgrown and no longer need, by clearing out the clutter in your environment and living more simply. Internally let go of those patterns that keep you unfocused. Saturn rules fear and Pluto rules hysteria and during this period it's important to center oneself to be aware and alert to what is happening and not be drawn into the madness.
With regard to personal clutter this is the time to clean out your closets, sell or give away those things you never will use or wear. Unfortunately for the retail industry the combination of a slowdown in the economy and a need to rid oneself of what one no longer needs, will both decrease profits and impulse buying. If one has money to spend it's a great time for consumers but right now consumers are pretty much interested in necessities. This is likely to change after the Saturn Pluto opposition leaves.
More Effects in the Natal Horoscope
In the physical body Saturn rules the bones and joints as well as constraints and consolidation. Whatever sign Saturn is placed in the natal horoscope is the part of the body that is both the smallest and moves the slowest and stress is likely to create stiffness here. Saturn's movement through Gemini will focus externally on the hands, wrists and shoulders and internally the lungs. Pluto governs things that are occurring below the surface that one isn't conscious of. It also rules inflammation. The passage of Pluto through Sagittarius will put stress on the hips, sciatic nerve and internally the liver.
This combination of Saturn and Pluto could increase swellings and joint pain. More media emphasis will be placed on arthritis, carpel tunnel syndrome, hip injuries, those areas ruled by both Gemini and Sagittarius. If one is susceptible difficulties in these areas can manifest during this period and if the problem has been around for a while it's likely to compel a need for treatment.
It's important to focus and relax and it might be a good idea to get some bodywork to help loosen up blockages. Even better would be to begin a regime that would delay or prevent further problems. Treatment such as homeopathy and naturopathy helps in the harmonization of the body and chiropractic, massage and acupuncture greatly aid in putting the body in alignment.
I want to bring the planet Neptune into our discussion of worldly events. In astrology Neptune rules, chemicals, gasses, viruses and infections. On September 11, 2001 Neptune was conjoined the South Node of the Moon in the horoscope of the United States. The Moon's South Node also called the Dragon's Tail is the Achilles heel of a horoscope. It's a point of both weakness and vulnerability considered by many to be brought on by past actions and a place of negative karma. In the United States chart it's connected to the house of death and the great loss of American lives certainly concurs with this.
During late October while Neptune was stationary or appearing to stand still in the sky it did so on the United States South Node, which is six degrees in the sign of Aquarius. At this time there was mass hysteria about the possibility of Anthrax infiltrating the United States population. Although some people were tragically affected, especially postal workers who as a group are ruled by Gemini, a widespread anthrax infestation did not occur. From the end of April to the end of May Neptune will be stationary again but no longer on the United States south node. Nonetheless there might be some more developments or even hysteria about vaccines or bio-chemical terrorism.
Take Advantage of the Final Saturn-Pluto Opposition
With the final Saturn-Pluto opposition occurring on May 25, it is important to get back to basics on an inner level. Along with what was mentioned before about harmonizing and putting the body into alignment, it might be a good idea to decrease the watching of television news with the exception of the weather report. Read, meditate, take walks, exercise, dance, converse, garden, make love and enjoy the onset of spring.
