Mercury and Venus Retrogrades Summer 2007
By Felissa Rose

Mercury will next go retrograde on June 15, 2007 at 7:41 PM EDT at 11 degrees 33 minutes of Cancer. It goes direct on July 9, 2007 at 10:16 PM EDT at 2 degrees 28 minutes of Cancer. During the entire period Mercury, ruler of information and communications will be in Cancer the sign of family and real estate. Purchasing or moving into a new residence can be complicated during this period with innumerable delays and unexpected hassles.

One individual who moved into an apartment while Mercury was retrograde was very prompt in paying utility bills, but the power company kept turning off her electricity for non-payment. After several months of this, she discovered that the building’s electric meters located in the basement were marked incorrectly. Hers and the next door neighbor’s, who never paid his bill, were interchanged. It was finally resolved but took several long months of intermittent darkness to figure it all out.

Mercury will next be retrograde from October 12 to November 1, 2007 and January 28 to February 18, 2008.

Venus will be going retrograde on July 27, 2007 at 1:29 PM EDT at 2 degrees 59 minutes of Virgo. It goes direct on September 8, 2007 at 12:15 PM EDT at 16 degrees 36 minutes of Leo.

Venus, mythological goddess of love, rules all relationships: romantic, platonic, aesthetic and diplomatic. Its influence is to beautify, harmonize and soften. Without Venus our civilization would not have progressed much beyond the caveman era. It certainly would have less refinement and more coarseness.

During its retrograde period, the things Venus influences will be less evident or be of diminished interest in the world. Considerably decreased is the importance of our visual sensibilities. People dress with less flair, one’s color sense tends to be muted. Now is not the time to purchase clothes or jewelry, experiment with new make-up, change your hair style and color. Bad hair days are more frequent as well as “just not looking right.” You won’t be alone as most others will feel the same way or just simply not care.

While Venus is retrograde, individuals will be less inclined towards balance and harmony. More evident during this period is a trashy aesthetic personified by pop stars Fergie, Britney Spears, and several American Idol contestants. Opening artistic or musical events during this period is unadvised as individuals are less in touch with the outward expression of beauty and creativity.

During this time the pace of relationships slows down. This is not the time to get married or host large parties. Falling in the midst of the big summer party season, one’s expectations should be lowered if plans are already underway to have a social event. Since Venus is the ruler of diplomacy, slowdowns in all sorts of negotiations can be expected; including labor unions, legal matters as well as world diplomacy.

Individuals and nations will have difficulty reaching an accord with peace negotiations and other forms of international discussions. Plans concerning the exit of US troops from Iraq are apt to be stagnant during this transit. Venus going direct may bring many to their senses about United States presence in Iraq and plans could go ahead to start bringing troops home.

From July 27 until August 8 Venus will be moving through the earth sign Virgo; sign of health, self-improvement, order and the harvest. Plantings made in the earlier earth sign of Taurus during April and May begin to be harvested as the Sun enters Virgo. Reassessing one’s garden and planting while Venus is retrograde is fine but taking action such as collecting seeds and planting bulbs should be delayed until Venus goes direct.

While Venus is retrograde avoid elective cosmetic surgery. The period Venus is stationary – particularly right before it goes retrograde is an optimum for any type of aesthetic procedure as long as the Moon isn’t void of course.

Venus retrograde is an excellent time to explore spiritual harmony through such practices as yoga, relaxation and meditation. I know an accomplished artist born with Venus retrograde who expresses her spiritual awareness and inner beauty visually through her paintings. Venus retrograde doesn’t negate artistic awareness; it just focuses on the inner stimulus for creating it.

Individuals born with this position seek an internal relationship with beauty and harmony. Upon selecting a pair of earrings their choice will be based more upon the earrings symbolic importance than the way it looks. What has to be satisfied is whether the earrings are communicating the inner expression of the individual as opposed to being just a pretty pair of earrings that fits one’s mood or attire.

From August 8 until September 8 Venus will be retrograde in Leo. The timing of weddings, social events, proposals and purchases of engagement rings should be reassessed during this period. Venus rules harmony and newlyweds will have to try harder to achieve it at their wedding and throughout their marriage. Those getting married at this time will have their work cut out for them. Social relationships are likely to proceed at a slower pace. One is more likely to attend parties where everyone arrives late and leaves early.

When a planet is stationary, the time it is about to go retrograde or direct in motion, this its influence is most pronounced. About a week or before or after it is about to go retrograde or direct, the world will wake up to Venus. There can be an intense buying spree, an increase release of new musical material, a rash of parties and socializing, as well as the onset and development of romantic relationships. More importantly, progress can be made in the resolution of differences between individuals and nations.

Unlike Mercury, which goes retrograde three times a year, Venus goes retrograde approximately every year and a half. The next Venus retrograde begins on March 6, 2009 and lasts until April 17, 2009.
